The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Alabama A&M University is designed to prepare leaders of social change, committed to working in and across a wide range of practice settings with diverse populations. The MSW program at Alabama A&M University is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The program focuses on competence in critical thinking and practice, contextual theories and approaches, diversity, communication methods, skills for working with vulnerable populations, and adaptation for specific practice settings. In addition to this core curriculum, students may design a concentration focus in child welfare, gerontology, or executive and organizational practice. Students have the opportunity to engage in professional, field experiences with a variety of agencies and programs while in the program.
Graduates of the MSW program at Alabama A&M University will be prepared to assume leadership roles in social work practice, based on knowledge, values, and skills, such as: identify and respond to complex ethical, cultural and social issues; identify, analyze and evaluate solutions to problems; design, implement and evaluate professional quality interventions; and promote a more just society. and elaborate stories to introduce yourself
Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Gail who had a passion for helping people even at a very young age. Growing up in a small town in Alabama with her large extended family, Gail was surrounded by many inspiring individuals. Her maternal grandmother was an inspiring leader who led a long and meaningful life filled with compassion and love toward her family and the community. This had a profound impact on Gail and she knew from a young age that she wanted to spend her life doing something that would help make a positive difference in the world.
Gail chose to pursue a degree in social work. After completing her bachelor’s degree at a local university, she continued her education and eventually enrolled in the master’s program at Alabama A & M. During her tenure there, Gail was inspired by the outstanding faculty and the opportunities available to her, furthering her passion to make a difference. Among her courses, she took several classes focused on counseling interventions and assessment, as well as social work implications and policymaking. From these experiences, she developed strong confidence in her skills to help people.
Gail graduated in May of 2015 with her Master of Social Work and accepted a position with a non-profit organization offering counseling and support to those suffering from addiction and substance abuse. Every day Gail is further humbled by the stories of transformation shared by her clients and it has been her passion to be part of the journey that leads to healing and hope. Gail is looking forward to continuing her education and exploring ways to make an even greater impact on the lives of others.
