1. Check the balance of the garage door. Open the door and observe the door in an open position. The door should remain in the open position without assistance and without any binding or rubbing against the tracks. If the door does not remain open, then you will need to adjust the torsion spring.
2. Adjust the tension of the torsion spring by loosening the set screws on the torsion spring mounting bracket. Use a socket wrench and turn the set screw counterclockwise a quarter turn. If the door is not balanced, turn the set screw another quarter turn counterclockwise and test the balance again. Continue adjusting the set screw until the door is in balance or until the set screw is at the bottom of the bracket.
3. After the balance is adjusted, make sure the set screws are tightened so that the bracket is secure. You may need to use a level to make sure the bracket is straight.
4. Close the garage door and make sure that it is properly aligned against the weatherstripping. Also, make sure there are no gaps between the door and the frame at the final closed position.er Version
Balancing a garage door with a torsion spring involves a few steps. First, check the metal tracks inside the garage for any dents or flat spots. If any are present, use a rubber mallet to tap them back into place.
Next, check all of the hardware that attaches the torsion spring to the wall. Make sure that all of the nuts and bolts are tightened securely.
Once the hardware is secure, adjust the cable tension lever. Pull it down to release the tension of the cable. Then, pull it up to increase the tension until the garage door is balanced properly.
Lastly, open the garage door and check for any unevenly raised spots or edges. If any are present, loosen the adjustment nuts on the end of the track and make the necessary adjustments until the door is level.
Once the door is balanced, turn off the power to the garage door opener. This will ensure that the torsion springs work properly and that the garage door remains balanced.
